Giving Tuesday with Gus
On Giving Tuesday, faculty, staff, students, and local community members came together to donate food and other essentials to George’s Free General Store during December Match Days.
The store is a free on-campus pantry for students struggling with food insecurity and relies on donations and contributions from the Washington community. Non-perishables, canned goods, basic foods, and personal hygiene items are always needed.
Who better to travel around campus collecting these donations than Washington College’s favorite waterfowl, Gus the Goose? Gus (and his good friend, George) drove around in a decorated golf cart to pick up donations and take photos with friends all across campus!
In total, the Washington College community provided over 250 donations on Giving Tuesday. To learn more about the pantry, search “George’s Free General Store” on the Washington College website.

Mainstay of College Community Remembered
On January 2, 2025, Margaret “Peggy” Ann Walbert ’89 M’91 P’88 ’88 ’89 ’90 ’99 passed away. Peggy was the first in a long line of family members who have connections with Washington College: she was the mother of five alumni, Andrew Walbert ’99, Valerie Bodnar ’90, Timothy Walbert ’89, Holly Hamann ’88, and Beth Pinder ’88.
But they weren’t the only ones to graduate from the College: Peggy graduated with both a bachelor’s degree in history in 1989 and a master’s degree in history in 1991. In addition to being a graduate, Peggy worked as an administrative assistant in our Admissions Office and Development Department, working closely with members of the Board of Visitors and Governors.
Peggy will be greatly missed.

Women’s Rowing 50th Anniversary Celebration
This year’s Homecoming also marked a significant milestone for the Women’s Rowing program. A special dinner celebrating 50 years of the sport drew over 120 guests, showcasing the program’s impressive legacy. That legacy includes 15 All-Americans since 1999, 11 MARC Championships in the past 15 seasons, and numerous national accolades. The dinner served as a testament to the ongoing dedication and achievements of these athletes, past and present.
