In Memory of Peter Van Dyke (1937–2024)
By Julie Jans
Peter Van Dyke, a former board member of Washington College, passed away on October 16, 2024, leaving a legacy of leadership, dedication, and generosity. A graduate of the Webb Institute, Van Dyke earned a doctorate in engineering and applied physics from Harvard University, followed by a master’s in management science from Johns Hopkins University.
Van Dyke’s passion for exploration and innovation shaped much of his career. He began as a research scientist at Hydronautics Inc. before going on to work at the Martin Company and then the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. Later, he started a small investment club as a hobby, eventually leading to a successful second career in quantitative financial management at T. Rowe Price, where he became the managing director of the Spectrum series of mutual funds.
He served on the Washington College Board of Visitors and Governors from 1999 to 2022 and, for many years, chaired the Investment Committee. His leadership was instrumental in strengthening the College’s financial stability, and in recognition of his many contributions, the Board granted him emeritus status in February 2024.
Ed Nordberg ’82, a former chair of the board, praised Van Dyke’s profound influence, saying, “Peter Van Dyke’s intellect, integrity, passion, and extraordinary generosity made an indelible mark on Washington College. His legacy of leadership will continue to shape the College’s future for generations to come.”
Outside of his professional life, Van Dyke had many interests. He enjoyed birdwatching, duck hunting, beekeeping, and collecting hunting decoys. Along with his wife, Judy, he made a generous donation to help fund the construction of a bird-banding laboratory, supporting the work of the Washington College Center for Environment & Society. This gift will provide invaluable opportunities for student and faculty research for years to come.
Van Dyke is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy Ray Van Dyke, his sons George Van Dyke and Peter Van Dyke Jr., and his grandchildren Edward, Lucy, William, and Robert.
