Spring Migration Weekend & Military Appreciation Day
Washington College alums returned to the Eastern Shore for the yearly Spring Migration Alumni Weekend at the end of April. On Friday, April 26, they enjoyed the Seventh Annual Ed Athey Golf Tournament, Professor Bob Mooney’s final class, reunion cocktail parties, and a waterfront party with a live performance by Dell Foxx Company.
Saturday, alums participated in alumni athletics games, joined the Owings Library Terrace dedication, and held the annual and beloved men’s lacrosse Fish Fry.
The event followed the very first Washington College Military Appreciation Day, hosted by the men’s lacrosse team to honor the dedication and sacrifice of Washington College veterans who have played a significant role throughout our history in defending and protecting the freedom of the United States and its citizens.
During halftime of the game against Gettysburg (which the Shoremen ended up winning 18-14), 33 veterans were honored with an American flag unfurling ceremony. Guest speaker Christopher Ely ’70 detailed each veteran’s military experience and accolades as far back as the Korean War. Dozens of volunteers from the Washington College community took part in the ceremony, particularly in the unfurling of the flag, which covered 80% of Kibler Field.
Marine Colonel Edward “Ted” Greeley ’93 was featured for his military service during the ceremony. The Washington College community would like to thank John “Jay” Elliott ’75 for both his time and his desire to honor our veterans with this ceremony.
