Summer Sports Wrap
Men’s Basketball finished with a record of 8-17, doubling their wins from the previous year. The Shoremen were led by Head Coach Corey Begly in his second season. The team had notable conference wins against Haverford and Muhlenberg. Ethan Schwantes ’25 was named to the Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team at the conclusion of the season.
Women’s Basketball ended their season 17-10 and 9-6 among conference opponents. The team made it to the Centennial Conference Tournament and won in the first round against McDaniel, 45-40. The team fell to #12 ranked Gettysburg in the second round. Kaitlyn Boggs ’26, was named to the All-Centennial Second Team, and Karry Kelliher ’25 was named to the Conference’s Honorable Mention Squad. Boggs set the program record for most blocks in a game with eight in total.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming had a season full of record-breaking races and earned four postseason medals. Chase Hensen ’25 earned a gold medal in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. Nathan Rawa ’27 earned bronze in the 100 backstroke, and Zach Affeldt ’25 secured bronze in the 200-yard breaststroke. On the women’s side, Julia Banker ’28 and Brooke Bailey ’28 each broke program records, Banker in the 400 individual medley and Bailey in the 100 backstroke.
Sailing ended their dual semester season qualifying for the America Trophy in Ithaca, New York. Led by Joseph Bonacci ’25 at skipper, the team’s best finish was in the NC Central Fall Qualifier, where they placed second of seven. The team placed third of seven at the Princeton Fall Open. In the spring, the team placed fourth of eight in the Tom Noble Team Race hosted at Washington College and also sat sixth of 16 in The Grant Regatta with Bonacci and Austin Latimer ’27 at skipper and Lucy Sunderland ’28 and Nora Ciak ’28 as the crew.
Trap and Skeet earned first place at two of their eight contests this year. They placed first in the Upper East Coast Conference Championships and took home the title of number one at the University of Delaware Blue Hen Classic. The team was led by Marcus Rosenstiel ’28, who set a program record in American Skeet going 100/100 targets at the ACUI National Championships down in San Antonio, Texas. The team placed ninth of 31 teams in Texas.
Men’s Golf completed their second season as a reinstated program at Washington College. The team’s best finish was at the Ursinus Spring Classic. Matt Young ’27 recorded the lowest score of the season with a 76 at the Dickinson Fall Invitational. John Matthai ’25 and Colby Byer ’25 each shot their lowest scores in the Spring Awakening competition, with Matthai shooting a 78 and Byer a 79.
Women’s Tennis finished 8-9 on the season and 5-3 in conference action, winning three more regular season and two more conference matches than last year. The team finished fourth in regular season conference standings and made a berth in the Centennial Conference Women’s Tennis postseason. Isabella Sorhegui ’26 grabbed conference player of the week honors twice in the spring season.
Men’s Tennis finished 10-9 on the season, 4-4 in conference play. The team was nationally ranked for the first time in 18 years. The team entered the rankings at #59 and worked its way to #48. Sihoo Kim ’28 was named the Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year for men's tennis. He is the first men's tennis player from Washington College to receive this award. In addition, Kim earned All-Centennial Conference first team honors in both singles and doubles. The Shoremen also made it into the Centennial Conference postseason as the #4 seed.
The Baseball team finished the year 19-21 and 4-14 in conference action. The Shoremen saw three athletes earn their 100th career hit mark: Chase Ruppel ’26, Ty Everitt ’26, and Will Turner ’25. Ruppel broke the Washington College record for home runs in a single season by hitting his 10th on April 13. Less than two weeks later, the previous record holder, Drew Kinsey ’26, took it back with a home run in an April 25 game. Kinsey hit two more in the season and owns both records, for now, with 13 home runs in a single season and 23 in a career.
Washington College Softball ended the year with another playoff berth. They earned the fifth seed in the postseason tournament. The team ended with a record of 12-25, 7-9 in conference action. Nevaeh Unzueta ’25, Lilly Cook ’25, and Chloe Trefz ’25 each earned their 100th career hit on the season. The Shorewomen split with almost every conference opponent and ended the regular season with their first conference sweep of the year against Franklin & Marshall.
Men’s Lacrosse finished the year 7-10. The Shoremen’s largest win margin was against conference opponent McDaniel, where the team won 20-7 at home. Cam Carrigan ’26 led the team with 33 goals and goalkeeper Colin Gray ’27 ended the year with 134 saves. Nate Winters ’28 scored a season high five goals against Elizabethtown on February 22nd, and Tom Merritt ’25 added in a season high nine ground balls against Catholic on March 8.
Women’s Lacrosse ended the year with a 7-10 record, 3-5 in conference play. The team began the season with a 24-7 win over Marywood on February 15 and set a program record for goals in a game with 25 against McDaniel on April 5. Piper Evans ’26 was named Conference Offensive Player of the Week after her eight-goal and two-assist week in late February. MaryCate Anson ’26 also made her mark on the season, winning a program record 13 draw controls in one game. Tobin Chambers ’25 and Mia Salvatierra ’26 both reached career milestones this season, Chambers recording her 100th career point and 100th career goal weeks apart, and Salvatierra netting her 100th career goal in between.
Men’s Rowing completed their spring season under new coach Alex Kincaid ’19. The team’s varsity eight was nationally ranked 15th in the IRCA/IRA Coaches Poll following a third-place performance in the Knecht Cup. In the same regatta, the varsity four took home gold with a time of 7:00.36. The team’s most notable regatta was the Stockton Sprints, where the Shoremen swept the competition, taking first in all three races competed in. Following this performance, Lawrence Haleski ’28 was named to the IRCA 2025 Athlete Watchlist in the first week of April.
Women’s Rowing put up competitive races in the spring semester. A notable regatta for the Shorewomen was the Stockton Sprints where the varsity eight placed first in late March, beating out two teams with a time of 6:46.35. The highlight of the season for the varsity four was earning the silver medal in the Knecht Cup. The week after, the team was named the MARC team of the week.
